Changes to Portugal’s immigration rules

Visa for work search

Granted for a period of 120 days, extendable for another 60 days, will allow 1 entry into Portugal. It gives the Applicant the right to request a residence permit once the employment relationship is formalized and the visa is valid.

Short-term visa or temporary stay visa for seasonal work

Granting the right to enter and stay and to carry out the work activity specified in the respective visa or others, at one or successive employers.

  • Visa for Digital Nomads: It is granted to subordinate workers and self-employed professionals with a monthly average income of €705. It has a duration of 2 years, renewable for successive periods of 3 years. The procedure can start directly in Portugal.

Special conditions for nationals of Member States of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP)

When the visa applicant, regardless of the visa nature, is a national of a State in which the Agreement on Mobility is in force (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste):
a) The prior opinion of the Immigration Service is waived;
b) The competent services can only refuse to issue it if there is an indication of a ban on entry and stay in the Schengen Information Service.
c) When the applicant is the holder of a short-term, temporary-stay visa or has a legal entry into Portugal, he may apply for a temporary residence permit for more than 90 days and less than 1 year, renewable for the same period.

In addition to the Immigration Service, public entities that collect biometric data for the purposes of civil identification, namely the Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, I.P., and Espaços Cidadão, become competent for issuing and renewing the title.

Residence permit for trainees

Valid for 6 months, or for the duration of the program, with a period of 3 months being added to this duration, if it is less than 6 months, or for 2 years in the case of a long-term internship.

Residence permit for higher education students

Valid for 3 years, renewable for equal periods, unless the duration of the study program is shorter.

Family reunification

Visa applications for family members who wish to accompany the applicant for a residence visa may be applied for at the same time as the applicant's in the country of residence.
